The Proper Way to Clean Your Matte Finish Walls

We all have those areas in our homes where the painted wall surfaces get dirty and marked up over time. We find this mostly in entry areas, along staircases, and in kitchens and bathrooms. If you have chosen to go with a matte finish paint in those areas, cleaning your walls can be a little tricky. Many of our customers have asked us about cleaning their matte finished walls and in our experience this is what we have found to be the most effective solution:

STEP 1: Vacuum your walls to remove dust particles
STEP 2: Prepare two buckets, one with a mild detergent and water solution, and one with clean water to rinse the walls
STEP 3: Wash walls with a clean sponge and the mild detergent and water mixture. Use gentle strokes with the sponge, working from bottom, up.
STEP 4: Wipe the walls lightly because matte finishes have a tendency to wash off easily. It may be a good idea to keep some extra matte finish handy in order to make any touch-ups if need be.
STEP 5: Use the clean water and another clean sponge to rinse the matte finished walls. Use soft cloths to soak up any extra water.
STEP 6: Routinely cleaning your walls keeps the matte finish looking bright and fresh!

When Is the Exterior Painting Season in New Jersey?

Exterior painting is an important home-maintenance activity, adding protection to your home against the forces of nature that assail it. So when is the best time for exterior painting in New Jersey?

These dates change each year, however, based on daytime temperatures and precipitation. The general rule is that the air and the home exterior must be at least 50 degrees, and the house must be dry.

Most paint manufacturers also produce low-temp paints, which can be applied in temperatures as low as 35 degrees. While exterior painting in these circumstances is not ideal, there are times when it is necessary.

Some homeowners are surprised to learn that extremely hot, dry days are not the best for exterior painting. This is because the paint tends to dry too quickly, “baking” rather than curing. It is more difficult on these days to keep the “wet edge” that normally ensures a uniform finish. The best temperatures for exterior painting are between 65 and 90 degrees. If you do need to paint your house on a hot day, painting contractors recommend working on areas that are not in direct sunlight, moving around the house as the day progresses.
